Building a Better Community | July Initiative | In Support of Backpacks For Kids

Backpacks For Kids is an annual campaign where organizations and individuals donate backpacks filled with school supplies for children in need. This summer, we’re partnering with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) to collect backpacks that will be distributed at the beginning of the school year.

No child wants to feel left out, and not every family can afford the laundry-list of items that are required for their child or children to attend school. A backpack loaded with all the basic items gives students the necessary tools to complete their schoolwork in class and at home. Backpacks For Kids wants children to start the school year off right.

We will be collecting backpacks from July 2nd until early August. Our team asks that you drop them off at our office, 2420 – 39th Ave NE, where we will give them a quality control check and then deliver them to the drop-off center.

How can you participate?

Supporting Backpacks For Kids is easy as making a trip to your favourite big box store or office supply retailer. Simply purchase a backpack and fill it with the necessary items (pencils, pens, erasers, etc.) that a child will need during the school year. The backpacks will be divided into three age groups, so please choose the items accordingly based on grade level:

  • Kindergarten to Grade 3 – Estimated cost $42.00
  • Grades 4 to 6 – Estimated cost $105.00
  • Junior High/Senior High – Estimated cost $155.00

For a helpful guide, simply download and print this school supply checklist  for each grade level. In the spirit of fairness, please do not add any extra items to the backpacks. We want to ensure that each child receives the same items!
