Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Community, Connection, and Impact

As we look back on 2024, we’re reminded of the incredible strength and unity of our community. This past year brought its share of challenges and successes, but through it all, the resilience of Calgarians and the dedication of our Westcor team have remained constant.

Continuing Our Mission: Building a Better Community

At Westcor, community service is at the heart of who we are and what we do. 2024 was another year where our “Building a Better Community” initiative came to life. Through acts of service, support for those in need, and a shared focus on connection, we worked to make a meaningful impact and strengthen the bonds that tie us together.

• Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child
  • Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, is a global initiative that delivers gift-filled shoeboxes to children in need, bringing joy and the message of hope. Since its inception in 1993, over 198 million children in more than 170 countries have received these shoeboxes. In 2024, Westcor continued our tradition of supporting this cause by organizing a company-wide shoebox packing event. Our team members came together to fill boxes with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items, embodying the spirit of giving and making a tangible impact on children’s lives worldwide.

• Parkdale Community Stampede Breakfast
  • The Parkdale Community Association hosts an annual Stampede Breakfast, fostering community spirit and providing a space for residents to connect during Calgary’s Stampede festivities. In July 2024, Westcor partnered with the association to support this event. Our volunteers, including Chris, Marshall, and Cathleen, assisted in cooking and serving breakfast to attendees. Additionally, Westcor donated portable toilets to ensure the comfort and convenience of all guests. This collaboration highlighted our commitment to engaging with and supporting local communities.

• Calgary Women’s Shelter – Fear Is Not Love
  • The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, now known as Fear Is Not Love, has been a beacon of hope for individuals experiencing family violence and abuse since 1974. Their mission is to support individuals in their journey towards lives free from violence and abuse. This year we continued our ongoing partnership with their team and organized a food and clothing drive to support this vital organization. Through the collective efforts of our team and partners, we provided essential items to families in crisis, reinforcing our dedication to supporting vulnerable members of our community.

• Water for The Mustard Seed
  • The Mustard Seed is a non-profit organization that has been caring for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty since the 1980s. They provide basic needs, housing, employment services, and spiritual care across Alberta and British Columbia. In July 2024, Westcor continued its annual tradition of delivering pallets of water to The Mustard Seed in downtown Calgary. This initiative ensured that Calgary’s un-homed population stayed hydrated during the summer heat, reflecting our ongoing commitment to meeting basic needs and supporting those experiencing homelessness in our city.

• Ronald McDonald House – Meals for Resident Families
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) provides a home-away-from-home for families with children receiving medical treatment, keeping families together during challenging times. For this event, our team prepared and served meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary. We organized a dinner in June and a brunch in August, offering comfort and nourishment to families during their stay.

This initiative underscored our commitment to supporting health and wellness within our community and our ongoing relationship with the Ronald McDonald House Calgary. In addition to Meals for Residents Families, our Project Team on the RMHC Calgary Expansion project also played an integral role in setting up the “Brick-by-Brick” campaign fundraising to support The Big Build.

• Concert in the Country – Terminator Foundation
  • The Terminator Foundation is dedicated to ending the stigma of addiction by providing activity-based recovery programs, including their annual “Concert in the Country” event. This event brings together the community to support individuals in recovery through music and fellowship. In 2024, Westcor proudly sponsored the BBQ at the Concert in the Country, supporting the foundation’s mission and honoring first responders. Our involvement highlighted the importance of mental health support and community engagement.

• Hike for a Cause – Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley
  • The Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley is committed to enhancing palliative care services and support in the region. Their “Hike for a Cause” event raises awareness and funds to improve the quality of life for individuals with life-limiting illnesses. Westcor participated in this event in 2024, with our team members joining the hike to show solidarity and support for palliative care initiatives. Our involvement demonstrated our dedication to health and wellness causes within our community.

• A Successful Day at the Calgary Drop-In Centre: Free Goods Program Volunteering
  • The Calgary Calgary Drop-In Centre plays a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and those in need. In 2024, Westcor volunteers returned to the Drop-In Centre’s donation facility, inspired by the impactful experience of working there the previous year.Our team assisted with sorting and organizing donated goods, managing inventory, and ensuring essential items reached those who needed them most.

The centre’s well-run operations kept our volunteers busy throughout the day, providing an efficient and rewarding experience.By working behind the scenes, we contributed to the centre’s mission of offering dignity, support, and resources to vulnerable members of our community. This initiative reflects our belief in the importance of collaboration and compassion in addressing homelessness.

• Ho Ho Holiday 5K
  • The Ho Ho Holiday 5K is a festive run that brings communities together to celebrate the holiday season while supporting local charities. In December 2024, Westcor participated in the event held in Airdrie by providing and serving hot chocolate to runners and attendees. This gesture added warmth to the chilly day and embodied the spirit of giving and community connection during the holidays.

• Supporting The Happy Birthday Project: A Fundraising Competition for a Cause
  • This year, we were proud to continue our partnership with The Happy Birthday Project, a local organization dedicated to bringing joy to children and mothers in need by helping them celebrate birthdays, even in difficult circumstances. Their mission to provide birthday magic to families facing adversity perfectly aligns with our commitment to building a stronger community.

This year, we hosted another fun-filled fundraising competition, inviting our staff and industry partners to get involved. With creative raffle prizes, including sports tickets and a unique catered lunch, the event was a hit. Together, we raised funds to ensure more children feel special on their birthdays, easing the financial burden on families and spreading joy throughout the community.

We’re honored to support The Happy Birthday Project and look forward to continuing our collaboration to make a difference in the lives of local families.

Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Center – Over the Moon Charity Classic
The Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Center works to support children, youth, and families affected by abuse. Their advocacy focuses on creating safe spaces and providing essential services that help children heal and thrive. In 2024, Westcor sponsored the Over the Moon Charity Classic, a key fundraising event for the center. This sponsorship contributed directly to Luna’s mission, ensuring children and families receive the care and resources they need to rebuild their lives.

McMan Foundation – Dinner Sponsorship and Charity Golf Tournament
The McMan Foundation provides support for youth, families, and individuals facing significant challenges, including homelessness, mental health struggles, and unemployment. Westcor strengthened its partnership with the foundation by sponsoring a $3,000 dinner, ensuring that vulnerable individuals in the program received a nourishing meal. Additionally, Westcor participated in McMan’s inaugural charity golf tournament, with representatives joining the event to raise funds and awareness. These efforts demonstrated our dedication to supporting holistic care and services for at-risk communities.

Forward Level Marketing – Good Humans Doing Great Things
Forward Level’s “Good Humans Doing Great Things” initiative aims to celebrate and empower community builders. The event raises funds for impactful causes such as the Jim Button Community Builder Fund, which supports individuals striving to create meaningful change. Westcor participated by sponsoring a hole at the event’s Golf Tournament out in Kananaskis and contributing to its fundraising goals. Our team, represented by our President & CEO, Bob Robinson, and our VP Pre-Construction. Kyle Morgan, was proud to align with Forward Level’s vision of fostering a culture of generosity and collaboration.

Ronald McDonald House Charities – The Big Build
The Ronald McDonald House Charities’ “The Big Build” campaign supports families with sick children by providing essential housing during medical treatments. In 2024, Westcor sponsored the launch event with a $25,000 contribution, helping to fund expansions and improvements to the Ronald McDonald House facilities. This partnership underscored our commitment to providing comfort and care to families navigating difficult times. Representatives from Westcor joined other supporters in a tile tour that showcased the meaningful impact of the project.

Day of Reconciliation
In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Westcor honored Indigenous communities and promoted awareness by wearing commemorative shirts and participating in events dedicated to reconciliation. This initiative reflected our respect for Canada’s Indigenous peoples and our dedication to fostering meaningful dialogue and understanding. By acknowledging the importance of this day, Westcor reaffirmed its commitment to building bridges and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives.

CCA Education Fund and SAIT School of Construction Tournaments
Westcor extended its support to educational initiatives through sponsorships at the CCA Education Fund and SAIT School of Construction tournaments. These events help fund scholarships and programs that empower future industry leaders. By investing in education, Westcor emphasized its commitment to fostering growth, innovation, and excellence in construction and beyond. Representatives from our team proudly participated in these tournaments, championing the importance of education and professional development.
