This Month’s Initiative: Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child

Following another successful community initiative during the month of October (Men’s clothing and hygiene pack drive for the Drop-In Centre) we are excited to announce that we are partnering with Samaritan’s Purse to support their highly reputed program, Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child began in 1990 when Dave and Jill Cooke of Wales were watching a television report about Romanian orphans. They asked: “How can we provide some joy to the real victims—the children—who live in these situations day after day?”

Dave and Jill couldn’t stop the poverty, but they could offer something – the gift of love. Together, they filled a convoy of nine trucks with medical supplies, food, clothing, and Christmas gifts for children, then drove to Romania. It marked the start of what has become the world’s largest children’s Christmas program.

At Westcor, we want to do our part to help those families in need; to help their children experience the simple pleasures of receiving a gift this holiday season. For the month of November, we’ve partnered with Samaritan’s Purse and Operation Christmas Child to collect gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need.

Put yourself back to a time when you were giddy with excitement at the prospect of receiving a gift from loved ones at Christmas. Whether it’s a stuffed animal, a soccer ball, or an action figure, they all matter to a child who receives your box this Christmas. These simple items can forever change the life of a young child who has suffered as a result of poverty, war, disease, and famine. This shows them they are valued, loved, and never forgotten.

Just follow these steps:

  • Follow this link: https://www.samaritanspurse.ca/pack-a-shoebox/
  • Read through the information and follow the steps – they make it easy to make a difference!
  • Create your shoebox, label it, and drop it off at their processing centre (20 Hopewell Way NE) before Dec 7th, or drop by our office for a coffee and give it to us to deliver!
  • Please remember your $10 donation per shoebox which helps cover costs and enables Samaritan’s Purse to continue this tradition year after year.

These shoeboxes are a simple gesture that will mean the world to those children who receive them, your effort and support is appreciated by all of us at Westcor and every family and child that is affected by this impactful initiative.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact Bradley.morgan@westcor.net for info.

Thank you to all who participate!
