Senior Estimator

As the Senior Estimator, and with a mastery of the tender cycle and the ability to handle any role in the estimating team, providing senior technical estimating services, doing amongst others:

Preconstruction Estimating

  • Understand and abide by the laws of tendering and contract
  • Collaborate with the Chief Estimator to determine which jobs to tender
  • Prepare preliminary tender schedule
  • Act as a liaison between the client, consultant and Westcor during tender period
  • Review tender packages and establish Westcor Tender Plan
  • Participate in walk throughs
  • Prepare appropriate quantity take-off according to the tender plan and input into estimate spreadsheet
  • Provide summary review of bids to Chief Estimator and or Executive team prior to closing
  • Send out invitations to bid with corresponding plans and specs to qualified trades
  • Prepare preliminary tender schedule
  • Participate in Construction Management Budgets
  • Participate in post tender negotiations
  • Participate in the trade partner pre-award meeting
  • Assist Chief Estimator with Insurance and Bonding requirements including completing applications for submission

Turnover and post-pre-construction activities

  • Participate in transition period activities (estimate budget, estimate binder, and turnover meeting)
  • Maintain current understanding of all ongoing jobs
  • Stay informed of profit/loss margins on jobs
  • Participate in formal Lessons Learned at end of projects to get a clear understanding of the ways the estimating services impacted the Project Delivery Team during project delivery

Data and Record Management

  • Set Up and work within Westcor’s ERP system
  • Set up estimate spreadsheet as per contract documents
  • Prepare appropriate quantity take-off according to the tender plan and input into estimate spreadsheet
  • Research new trades for specific tenders and for future work
  • Update the trades list for the current bid/estimate
  • Maintain estimate filing in archives
  • Analyze quotes from subcontractors/suppliers and input appropriate quotes into estimate spreadsheets
  • Ensure tender forms are complete and submitted as per closing times/dates


  • Conduct/arrange pre-construction site inspections
  • Send out invitations to bid with corresponding plans and specs to qualified trades
  • Make and answer any calls related to tender/bid with trades
  • RFI errors and omissions to consultants
  • Update the appropriate Westcor team members with tender results


  • Provide support and guidance to junior roles
  • Foster an environment where learning is encouraged
  • Recommend opportunities so that members of the team know of and value the expertise and skills within the team
  • Recommend opportunities for members of the team to work across programs to optimize the use of resources and achieve results
  • Encourage a passion for work and a sense of team
  • Motivate members of the team to develop and exhibit a continuous improvement mindset and encourage junior roles to make recommendations

Participation in Business Development Efforts

  • Participate in seeking out new opportunities
  • Act as a Westcor Brand Ambassador

Expected Skills and Attributes:

  • Thorough knowledge of construction management and construction estimating principles and practices.
  • Thorough understanding of all modes of delivery and contract types and can confidently guide a team through addressing all scopes of work on a project.
  • Thorough understanding of supply chain management knowing who to call and how to review scopes  of  work  to  maximize benefit to the tender.
  • Thorough understanding of risk mitigation in all its forms and the ability to evaluate risk from a business perspective as well as from a tender specific perspective.
  • The ability to evaluate situations and lead a team comprised of estimating and non-estimating team members.
  • Thorough understanding of supply chain management.
  • Ability to understand actions and decisions taken by the Chief Estimator and ability to make Chief Estimator decisions in his/her absence e.g. non-typical General Contractor requirements and provisions usually located in the first 100 pages of the specifications book.
  • Analytical and creative thinking skills.
  • Communication and customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond to action requests and competing deadlines in a timely matter.
  • Effective time management. Effective data management.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Project, Bluebeam, FTP sites as well as different share sites that tender packages are provided through.
  • Ability and eagerness to learn technology, concepts, construction theory vs reality.


  • Completion of a Degree or Diploma in the construction or related field
  • 8 years of related and progressive experience (with a Degree) or 10 years of related and progressive experience (with a Diploma)
  • Technical knowledge and experience bidding Design Build and Construction Management projects
  • Experience in the construction / GC industry
  • Experience working as part of team
  • Experience with data management and record keeping
